Revitalize Your Spirit: Holistic Ways to Beat Burnout in the City

Bonjour, beautiful souls! šŸŒ±āœØ

Ā  Ā Ā Living in London is like dancing in a whirlwind. The city pulses with energyā€”thereā€™s always something happening, someone to meet, and somewhere to be. As a self-confessed overachiever and perfectionist, I thrive on this hustle. But lately, I’ve realized that if Iā€™m not careful, like Icarus flying too close to the sun, I risk burning my wings. I constantly juggle my passion for creating (and creating wellā€”thanks, perfectionism) with my fundamental need for physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

My Struggle with Balance

Ā  Ā Ā Iā€™ll be honest: balance isnā€™t my natural state. I love the thrill of ticking off to-do lists and chasing big dreams. But my need to do everything perfectly often leaves me feeling stretched too thin, like butter spread over too much bread. There have been times when my yoga mat collected more dust than memories or when my poor houseplants wilted from neglect because I was too busy chasing another deadline.

Ā  Ā Ā But recently, something clicked. Maybe it was watching a video on Instagram @channygrayhome where she is creating a stunning plant wall in their home. It struck a chord with me because, despite having around 15 plants already, Iā€™ve always dreamed of having a full wall of green. The idea of bringing a little more serenity into my chaotic life was just too appealing to ignore. So, I decided to take the plunge and start building my own plant wallā€”an oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle. Itā€™s a small step, but one that reminds me to nurture myself as much as I nurture these plants.

Embracing Holistic Wellness

Ā  Ā Ā As I navigate this journey of finding balance, Iā€™ve come back to the things that truly feed my soul: yoga, herbalism, and crafting.

Yoga: My relationship with yoga has been a bit like that with an old friend. Sometimes we fall out of touch, especially when life gets hectic, but I always find my way back. The unpredictability of my scheduleā€”with morning, midday, and evening shiftsā€”often throws me off. But Iā€™ve learned to carve out small pockets of time to stretch, breathe, and reconnect, whether itā€™s a 10-minute flow in the morning or a gentle stretch before bed. Itā€™s not about doing it perfectly; itā€™s about doing it consistently.

Herbalism and Home Remedies: One of my go-to remedies for unwinding is peach green tea. šŸ‘šŸŒæ Not only does it taste like sunshine in a cup, but it also comes with a host of benefits: itā€™s packed with antioxidants, boosts metabolism, and helps calm the mind. Making a cup of this soothing tea is one of my little ritualsā€”a reminder that wellness can be simple and delicious. Crafting and Creating: Iā€™ve always found joy in making things with my hands, whether itā€™s knitting a cozy scarf, crafting homemade soaps, writing in my journal, or creating unique beverages. šŸ§¶āœļøšŸ¹These activities allow me to slow down, be present, and let my creativity flow. Theyā€™re also great reminders that not everything has to be perfectā€”sometimes, the beauty is in the imperfections.

Tips for Finding Your Own Balance

  1. Start Small: You donā€™t need to overhaul your entire life to find balance. Start with small, manageable changes that bring you joyā€”like creating a plant wall or setting aside five minutes for mindfulness each day.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Itā€™s so easy to ignore the signs when youā€™re in the cityā€™s fast lane, thinking, “Iā€™ll rest when I’m done” (or even “when I’m dead,” though let’s not go there šŸ˜…). But is that really the point? Wouldnā€™t it be better to find a way to live happily now, with a body that feels good and a mind thatā€™s at peace?
  3. Set Realistic Goals: I know the struggle of wanting to do it allā€”Iā€™ve been there! Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we take on too much. The key is to be kind enough to ourselves to let go of what doesnā€™t serve us anymore. Adjust your goals when needed, and remember that itā€™s okay to lighten your load.
  4. Create a Flexible Routine: Life in a city like London is anything but predictable. Find a wellness routine that fits your lifestyle and allows for flexibility. Itā€™s not about sticking to a strict schedule; itā€™s about discovering what works for you and adapting as needed. 5. Reconnect with Nature: Whether itā€™s through a plant wall, a walk in one of Londonā€™s beautiful parks, or simply opening your window to let in some fresh air, reconnecting with nature can do wonders for your well-being. šŸƒ For those looking to explore green spaces in London, you can find some ideas in my posts Embrace Serenity: Experience the Healing Magic of London’s Green Sanctuaries and Part 1: Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Attractions in London.
  6. Go with the Flow: Life is full of ups and downs, just like the tides. Itā€™s about learning to navigate the highs and lows with grace and finding moments of peace amidst the chaos. Donā€™t get discouraged when things donā€™t go as plannedā€”sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the best places.
