Bonjour, beautiful souls! š±āØ
Ā Ā Ā Living in London is like dancing in a whirlwind. The city pulses with energyāthereās always something happening, someone to meet, and somewhere to be. As a self-confessed overachiever and perfectionist, I thrive on this hustle. But lately, I’ve realized that if Iām not careful, like Icarus flying too close to the sun, I risk burning my wings. I constantly juggle my passion for creating (and creating wellāthanks, perfectionism) with my fundamental need for physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness.
My Struggle with Balance
Ā Ā Ā Iāll be honest: balance isnāt my natural state. I love the thrill of ticking off to-do lists and chasing big dreams. But my need to do everything perfectly often leaves me feeling stretched too thin, like butter spread over too much bread. There have been times when my yoga mat collected more dust than memories or when my poor houseplants wilted from neglect because I was too busy chasing another deadline.
Ā Ā Ā But recently, something clicked. Maybe it was watching a video on Instagram @channygrayhome where she is creating a stunning plant wall in their home. It struck a chord with me because, despite having around 15 plants already, Iāve always dreamed of having a full wall of green. The idea of bringing a little more serenity into my chaotic life was just too appealing to ignore. So, I decided to take the plunge and start building my own plant wallāan oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle. Itās a small step, but one that reminds me to nurture myself as much as I nurture these plants.
Embracing Holistic Wellness
Ā Ā Ā As I navigate this journey of finding balance, Iāve come back to the things that truly feed my soul: yoga, herbalism, and crafting.
Yoga: My relationship with yoga has been a bit like that with an old friend. Sometimes we fall out of touch, especially when life gets hectic, but I always find my way back. The unpredictability of my scheduleāwith morning, midday, and evening shiftsāoften throws me off. But Iāve learned to carve out small pockets of time to stretch, breathe, and reconnect, whether itās a 10-minute flow in the morning or a gentle stretch before bed. Itās not about doing it perfectly; itās about doing it consistently.
Herbalism and Home Remedies: One of my go-to remedies for unwinding is peach green tea. ššæ Not only does it taste like sunshine in a cup, but it also comes with a host of benefits: itās packed with antioxidants, boosts metabolism, and helps calm the mind. Making a cup of this soothing tea is one of my little ritualsāa reminder that wellness can be simple and delicious. Crafting and Creating: Iāve always found joy in making things with my hands, whether itās knitting a cozy scarf, crafting homemade soaps, writing in my journal, or creating unique beverages. š§¶āļøš¹These activities allow me to slow down, be present, and let my creativity flow. Theyāre also great reminders that not everything has to be perfectāsometimes, the beauty is in the imperfections.
Tips for Finding Your Own Balance
- Start Small: You donāt need to overhaul your entire life to find balance. Start with small, manageable changes that bring you joyālike creating a plant wall or setting aside five minutes for mindfulness each day.
- Listen to Your Body: Itās so easy to ignore the signs when youāre in the cityās fast lane, thinking, “Iāll rest when I’m done” (or even “when I’m dead,” though let’s not go there š ). But is that really the point? Wouldnāt it be better to find a way to live happily now, with a body that feels good and a mind thatās at peace?
- Set Realistic Goals: I know the struggle of wanting to do it allāIāve been there! Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we take on too much. The key is to be kind enough to ourselves to let go of what doesnāt serve us anymore. Adjust your goals when needed, and remember that itās okay to lighten your load.
- Create a Flexible Routine: Life in a city like London is anything but predictable. Find a wellness routine that fits your lifestyle and allows for flexibility. Itās not about sticking to a strict schedule; itās about discovering what works for you and adapting as needed. - Reconnect with Nature: Whether itās through a plant wall, a walk in one of Londonās beautiful parks, or simply opening your window to let in some fresh air, reconnecting with nature can do wonders for your well-being. š For those looking to explore green spaces in London, you can find some ideas in my posts Embrace Serenity: Experience the Healing Magic of London’s Green Sanctuaries and Part 1: Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Attractions in London.
- Go with the Flow: Life is full of ups and downs, just like the tides. Itās about learning to navigate the highs and lows with grace and finding moments of peace amidst the chaos. Donāt get discouraged when things donāt go as plannedāsometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the best places.
